Bernice McKenna's Experience
Bernice's attitude to work and her professionalism is fantastic and we're lucky to have her as part of our team. Bernice was very clear from the outset that she would need flexibility in her role and we were more than happy to provide that. This has worked out really well and over time we have built up a trusting relationship with room for give and take for both parties.
1. What were, or are, the biggest challenges you faced going back into the work place having had children?
Juggling everything – trying to give 110% to my job whilst trying to be the Mum I always wanted to be. The worry of not being able to make the most of my experience in a new role where I needed flexible working hours. I truly believed that I couldn’t work full time because of what most companies seem to expect but I knew I had the ability to hold a senior management position and fitting in time with my daughter.
2. How did your career change after having children?
It changed massively as my priorities needed to. I gave up a Director position with a large company to have my daughter; at that time I didn’t have a healthy work/life balance and that was definitely something I needed to find on my return to work. I was lucky to find Acorn Property Group who recognised my experience and offered me flexibility with my hours whilst fulfilling my career goals.
3. How do you balance your career with your family?
I am fortunate that Acorn is a family oriented company. I am able to work from home a couple of days a week which means I can do the school run and be back at my desk at home at the same time I would start in the office. I work in the evenings to catch up on the days I leave earlier to take my daughter to her after school activities.
4. How has working for Acorn enhanced your family/ work life balance?
Acorn has made it possible for me to have a job which I love and maintain the balance of being there for my daughter. I have the best work/life balance I have ever had in my career and it feels great. The mutual respect and trust means I put in extra hours because I want to and not because it is expected. It also means that I have never missed anything important like sports day or school mass and I know Acorn wouldn’t want me to. It’s give and take and very healthy.
5. If you could give your ‘pre-children’ self, one piece of advice about being a working mother, what would it be?
Find the right company who recognise your ability and experience and be honest with yourself and them as to expectations. It is totally possible to fulfill your career aspirations and goals whilst having a good, healthy and fun life with family and friends.
6. What is it about this industry that appeals to you?
I have been working in the New Homes industry for 25 years and am passionate about property. Acorn have an amazing approach to the schemes they design and everyone has a voice within the company. Our product is exciting and innovative and no two schemes are the same which makes it all the more exciting. I remember reading this on Acorn’s website prior to my interview and it could not be more true - “I love who I’ve been, but I love who I’m becoming”
