Elise Langton's Experience
1. What were, or are, the biggest challenges you faced going back into the work place having had children?
As my maternity leave drew to an end, I found myself questioning my abilities and brain power; would I still remember how to use the computer, pick up the phone, speak to other adults? Aside from these anxieties about returning to a competitive sales environment where I was my own worst critic, I struggled with the guilt of returning to work while my daughter was still so young (I came back to work when she was 8 months old). I also struggled with the logistics of making sure we were both out of the house on time in the morning, and ensuring that there was somebody there to pick her up in the evening if I couldn't get back from work in time. My time management skills definitely needed tightening up!
2. How did your career change after having children?
My career has not changed per se, however I've found I need to facilitate both my "work brain" and my "mum brain" and juggle things to make sure that I'm fulfilling both roles, which has necessitated an adjustment in the expectations I have of myself.
3. How do you balance your career with your family?
Make the weekends count!
4. How has working for Deverell Smith enhanced your family/ work life balance?
Deverell Smith has shown a good level of understanding of the fact that I do have family commitments and given me a greater level of flexibility than I've previously been given. This might mean I have to leave the office early, or work from home on occasions. As long as I'm doing the work I'm expected to do, they've treated me with a level of trust which is reassuring, and in turn this makes me want to give more back.
5. If you could give your ‘pre-children’ self, one piece of advice about being a working mother, what would it be?
It IS possible to have a career and children, but you need to be realistic with the expectations you have of yourself. It's harder than other people make it look!
